Overview

The American Board of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery (ABOHNS) requires ongoing Continuing Certification through a four-component program. Requirements are organized by component category with annual participation.

Four-Component Structure

Professionalism and Professional Standing Maintain professional standards
Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment CME and self-assessment activities
Assessment of Knowledge, Judgment, and Skills Knowledge assessment
Improvement in Medical Practice Quality improvement activities

CME Requirements

  • CME requirements integrated into Lifelong Learning component
  • Self-assessment activities embedded within program

Subspecialty Certification

ABOHNS offers subspecialty certification in:

  • Complex Pediatric Otolaryngology
  • Neurotology
  • Sleep Medicine

Each subspecialty has additional requirements.

Focused Practice Designation (FPD)

Available designations include:

Adult Complex Thyroid/Parathyroid Surgery

  • Collaborative with American Board of Surgery
  • Two pathway options:
    • Training pathway
    • Practice pathway
