Overview

The Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure (MSBML) requires physicians to complete 40 hours of CME every 2 years — with a strict requirement that all 40 hours must be Category 1. Mississippi is one of the few states that accepts no Category 2 credits for physicians. DEA-registered practitioners have a mandatory controlled substances training requirement.

Mississippi physicians must complete 40 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ per 2-year cycle.

Total hours 100/2 years 100/2 years

Key Points for PAs

  1. NCCPA certification required — Must maintain active certification
  2. Higher total hours — 100 hours vs 40 for physicians
  3. New licensees — One-time 5-hour controlled substance requirement
  4. Supervision required — Collaboration agreement with attending physician

DO (Osteopathic) Physicians

Mississippi requirements for DO physicians are identical to MD requirements. DPM (podiatrists) also follow the same 40-hour, all-Category 1 requirement.

Tips for Mississippi Licensees

  1. Category 1 only — Mississippi accepts NO Category 2 credits for physicians
  2. No rollover — Plan carefully; excess hours don't carry forward
  3. DEA practitioners — Don't forget the 5-hour controlled substances requirement
  4. New PAs — Complete the one-time controlled substances training early
  5. Different requirements — PAs need 100 hours vs 40 for MDs
