Overview

The Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision requires physicians to complete 60 hours of Category 1 CME every 3 years and PAs to complete 20 hours annually. Both have mandatory pain management requirements, and PAs must complete unique supervision/delegation CME.

Physician (MD/DO) Requirements

Oklahoma physicians must complete 60 Category 1 CME hours per 3-year cycle.

CME Breakdown

Requirement Details
Total CME 60 hours per 3-year period
Credit type All Category 1
Cycle 3 years (preceding three years)
Pain management 1 hour per year (mandatory)

Pain Management Requirement

Per Oklahoma Senate Bill 1446 (2018), all physicians must complete 1 hour of pain management CME per year, which includes opioid prescribing education.

Documentation

Requirement Details
Submission Certify completion at renewal
Certificates Not required unless specifically requested
Audit Random or for-cause; 30-day notice for non-compliance

Physician Assistant Requirements

Oklahoma PAs must complete 20 hours of Category 1 CME annually — one of the few states with an annual PA cycle.

CME Breakdown

Requirement Details
Total CME 20 hours per calendar year
Credit type All Category 1 (Board or NCCPA approved)
Cycle Annual (calendar year)
Supervision CME 1 hour minimum per year

Supervision/Delegation CME (Unique to Oklahoma)

PAs must complete at least 1 hour of Category 1 CME per year concerning:

  • Supervision/collaboration agreements
  • Medical direction
  • Physician-PA delegation model

This directly addresses Oklahoma's PA practice model under physician delegation.

New Licensee Exemption

PAs initially licensed are exempt from CME reporting until one year after licensure.

Key Differences: MD vs PA

Aspect Physicians (MD/DO) Physician Assistants
Total hours 60 hours 20 hours
Cycle 3 years Annual
Annual rate 20 hrs/year 20 hrs/year
Pain management 1 hr/year Included in 20
Supervision CME N/A 1 hr/year required
Credit type All Category 1 All Category 1

Both professions have the same annual rate (20 hours/year), but PAs must report annually.

Audit Policy

Stage Consequence
Audit notice 30-day notification period
Non-compliance Penalties assessed per statute
Audit type Random or for-cause

DO (Osteopathic) Physicians

Oklahoma requirements for DO physicians are identical to MD requirements. Both must complete 60 Category 1 hours per 3-year cycle.

Tips for Oklahoma Licensees

  1. All Category 1 — No Category 2 accepted for either MDs or PAs
  2. Pain management is annual — 1 hour every year, not just per cycle
  3. PAs: Annual reporting — Must complete 20 hours every calendar year
  4. PAs: Don't skip supervision CME — 1 hour on delegation is mandatory
  5. New PAs: One-year grace period — Exempt until one year after licensure
