Overview

South Dakota is one of the few states with no state-mandated CME requirements for physicians. While physicians are expected to maintain professional competency, the state does not require specific CME hours for license renewal. However, PAs have requirements — either 30 CE hours annually or maintaining NCCPA certification. South Dakota participates in the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC).

Physician (MD/DO) Requirements

South Dakota does not mandate CME hours for physician license renewal.

  • Periodic audits may be conducted per SDCL 36-4-22.1
  • Maintain CME documentation in case of competency investigation

Interstate Compact

South Dakota participates in the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC) under SDCL 36-4-44, allowing expedited multi-state licensing for eligible physicians.

Military Provisions

SDCL 36-1B provides expedited license procedures for:

  • Military personnel
  • Military spouses

Tips for South Dakota Licensees

  1. MDs: No CME required — But maintain competency documentation anyway
  2. PAs: Choose your path — 30 hrs/year state CE OR NCCPA maintenance
  3. DEA registrants — 8-hour MATE Act training required regardless
  4. March 1 deadline — Odd-numbered years for physicians
  5. IMLC available — Expedited multi-state licensing option
  6. Keep records — In case of competency audit
